English Harbour,
Antigua

The historic harbour on Antigua's southern coast where Scott Stadum was born in 1978 — a Caribbean beginning to a life that would circle the globe.

English Harbour in the Archive

Where Scott Stadum's story begins — a Caribbean harbour town that set the compass for everything that followed.

English Harbour sits on the southern coast of Antigua, in the Leeward Islands of the eastern Caribbean. The town grew up around Nelson's Dockyard, the Georgian-era British naval base that remains one of the Caribbean's best-preserved historic harbours.

Scott Stadum was born here in 1978, and the island marks the first entry on a lived-places map that would eventually include Minnesota, Guyana, Washington D.C., Buenos Aires, Tbilisi, and the San Francisco Bay Area. For a family rooted deep in the North Dakota plains, Scott's Caribbean birthplace stands as a striking departure — a reminder that the Stadum story, generation by generation, has always been willing to travel far from where it started.

English Harbour is still recognized today as one of the finest natural harbours in the Caribbean, its steep headlands sheltering the dockyard from Atlantic storms just as they sheltered the Royal Navy two centuries earlier. That Scott's life began here — in a place defined by arrivals, departures, and the sea — seems fitting for the most internationally mobile member of the family archive.
